How is made up a rainbow?
Objects look made of different colors because we perceive the light reflected as colored light. The first studied and explained satisfactorily the colors of light, was Newton.
He experiments with a glass prism and established something that at first glance appears to contradict the experience: the white light as the Sun, is composed of several types of lights, lights that we perceive as colors.
This experiment was known as the “Newton diagram for the spectrum of white light” and demonstrated that the predominant colors were: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, which were continuous and appeared in the same order.
However, Newton also showed that the white light can be re-obtained if these colored lights are matched again, what is achieved with a lens.
And that is why when it rains; we can see how sunlight breaks down in the familiar six colors of the rainbow through the rain drops and moisture, which work like prisms.
Now, don’t waste your time and experiment with different types of glass prisms to see what you can get ;)
See you the next post :D!
